Yes, the argumentation is fairly repetitive (as this is often the case with self-development books) but it has given me great food for thought to move on with my own things. ![]() This book has helped me more than I thought it would. In The One Thing, Gary Keller and Jay Papasan say that success depends on the one thing that drives you, and they help you put your finger on it. People want to do better and more because success and productivity are often associated with quantity. ![]() Where all month long I’ve only been reading books with LGBT+ characters. This was another book I’ve read for my Pride Month readathon. There are some men who discover, after Arthur Less, that they never will be again.’ There are some men who have never been kissed like that. Like someone who has just learned a foreign language and can only use the present tense and only the second person. ‘He kisses – how do I explain it? Like someone in love. Less in a novel about mishaps, misunderstandings and the depth of the human heart. From France to India, Germany to Japan, Arthur almost falls in love, almost falls to his death and puts miles between him and the plight he refuses to face. So he begins to accept the invitations on his desk to half-baked literary events around the world. Arthur can’t say yes – it would be too awkward he can’t say no – it would look like defeat. A wedding invitation arrives in the post: it is from an ex-boyfriend of nine years who is engaged to someone else. I’ve had this book on my bookshelf for a while now (recurring theme, I know) and figured now was the perfect time to read it.Īrthur Less is a failed novelist about to turn fifty. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Why do the rich get richer even in a financial crisis? While “Kitchen” is regarded as an important work of Japanese literature, it didn’t maintain the relevance of modernist classics like Soseki or the firepower of true contemporary hits like the novels of Haruki Murakami. Ultimately, Yoshimoto’s “Kitchen” was something of a flash in a pan. In retrospect, it offers profound insight about the ennui of 1980s Japan and what it means to live in a ruthlessly rich society on the border of complete dissolution. “Kitchen” is a story about the persistence of loss and memory, and about finding one’s path through the world, with some romance and lots of delicious food along the way. ![]() Published in 1987, “Kitchen” was her debut novel.
